Siggiewi Labour band club closed after 28 years

The Labour band club of Siggiewi, situated in a palace considered public property in the village square, is expected to move premises after 28 years.

Newspaper Il- mument reveals that Siggiewi Labour followers said they are disappointed with the move and had raised their hopes of staying there after Labour leader Joseph Muscat had appointed Deputy Leader Toni Abela to take action of the situation.

The palace, valued at around €1.5 million, is now expected to be used by the Siggiewi local council. The property was granted to the Labour party by Labour government before the 1981 elections.

Abela was made responsible for making sure the property remains under the auspices of the Labour party in 2009. Last June, Abela presented a judicial protest against government, in a bid to show that proceedings in court to stop government from taking the property had started.

In a meeting called by Abela in August, the deputy leader revealed the property could no longer be retained by the Labour party, which left Siggiewi activists “angry” and let down, according to Il-mument.
