Prime Minister Joseph Muscat will deliver a lecture on the Commonwealth today at the London School of Economics.

The event will be chaired by Professor George Gaskell, professor of social psychology and pro-director at LSE; and introduced by Conservative MP Hugo Swire, minister of state for foreign affairs.

In his speech, 'The Commonwealth at 65 – from London to Valletta', Muscat will consider the future of the Commonwealth "and how to ensure it is an effective, prosperous and relevant organisation which meets the needs of its citizens."

The suggested hashtag for the event for Twitter users is #LSECommonwealth.

The Commonwealth today acts as an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire.

Malta will be hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2015.
