A 100-year-old World War I document is being exhibited at the National Archives in Rabat.

The document, received by British governor to Malta Leslie Rundle, was sent on 5 August 1914, a day after the first World War was declared.

The cable, signed by UK Cabinet member Lewis Harcourt, plainly informs the island that “war has broken out with Germany”.

A proclamation, an official document, was issued by the government.

As soon as the cable reached Malta, the island started preparing itself for the Great War.

Other documents held by the National Archives relating to World War I include thousands of war telegrams and correspondence on Maltese citizens who lost their lives during the war.
