Update 5 | Some localities still without power
Police investigating explosion at Marsa substation, next to Coca-Cola plant • Enemalta says power will be restored within the next few hours
Some areas in Qormi, Luqa, the Marsa industrial estate and Zebbug are still suffering from yesterday's power cut.
"We are working on repairs at the distribution centre and hope to restore supply soon," said a spokesman for Enemalta.
As Enemalta engineers continued working to restore electricity supply to all areas in Malta and Gozo, Civil Protection Department and Enemalta personnel managed to control the flames and eliminate risks of further damages at the distribution centre in Marsa.
During the switching operation to re-energies all localities, at around 10.45pm, supply to all areas was temporarily interrupted again. However, it immediately started being restored.
Power cuts were reported in various localities across Malta just 10 minutes before 7pm. Electricity is being restored, starting with the localities in the south.
CMRU, the police's communications, told MaltaToday that it was investigating an explosion that occurred at the Marsa substation, next to the Coca-Cola plant. Enemalta confirmed no injuries were reported.
The outage was caused by a fault at one of the generating units at the Delimara power station and an explosion in part of an electricity distribution centre in Marsa.
Police, civil protection department personnel and workers from other entities assisted Enemalta in extinguishing the fire and containing the damage caused by the explosion.
"The health and safety of all workers involved is being given utmost priority in all operations taking place in response to this emergency," Enemalta said.
In a second update, Enemalta said generating units were being re-energised and restoring supply to several areas in Malta and Gozo.
In a statement issued yesterday evening, Enemalta said its engineers and technicians were working to restore electricity supply to all areas in Malta and Gozo following a power outage caused by a fault at the Delimara Power Station.
Enemalta said that at arounf 7:50pm, one of the generating units at the Delimara Power Station tripped, causing a disruption of supply from all the other units.
The company added that its electricity generation and distribution sections were currently working to gradually restore supply to all areas affected.
