Former Chief Justice Hugh Harding passed away today, aged 88, only one day after his wife Marian died at the age of 85.

Harding graduated as a lawyer in 1949 and was the Election Commissioner for three consecutive general elections; in 1962, 1966, and 1971. He was appointed as a judge in 1980 and as Chief Justice in 1987. After retiring from the position in 1990, Harding was appointed as Chairman of the Permanent Law Reform Commission.

He also authored “History of Roman Law in Malta” and “Maltese Legal History under British Rule”.

The government praised Harding for the “integrity” he displayed throughout his career. In particular, they praised him for his work as a lawyer for the Malta Drydocks and for the research he had conducted in the history of legislation at the University of Malta.
