The General Retailers and Traders Union (GRTU) will, on behalf of shop owners, be seeking compensation from government as a result of this week’s electricity outage. GRTU’s President, Paul Abela, lamented the fact that the power cut occurred at a time when business is at its highest.

Between 2000 and 2014, there have been no less than 9 widespread blackouts in Malta and Gozo. In 2000, the lights went out on June 23rd, with 2002 and 2004 also suffering one outage each. In 2010, there were two power cuts in the space of just 11 days

More Maltese are buying property in Gozo. On the event of Santa Maria – a weekend traditionally popular amongst Maltese to take a break on the sister island - Gozo Tourism Authority, Joe Muscat, said that a new trend is beginning to emerge whereby Maltese are purchasing holiday homes, as opposed to renting them.
