Update: ‘Substantial’ amount of cash stolen during Maltapost hold-up
Police have launched a manhunt for an armed robber who reportedly ran off with a substantial amount of cash from a Maltapost branch in Valley Road, Birkirkara at 12.45pm.
Initial police investigations on site showed that the robber was wearing a white cap and sunglasses, and armed with a firearm when he stormed into the Maltapost branch. Nobody was injured during the hold-up except for shock.
He then asked the two employees inside the shop to hand over all the cash that they had inside the branch.
They handed over the cash to the armed and hooded robber, who then fled away from the shop.
On duty Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani-Grima has opened a magisterial inquiry as prescribed by law. She appointed various court experts to assist her in the investigations about the case.
Police mobile unit cars and SAG units were reportedly looking for a young man in jeans and a baseball cap. Some roads had been blocked to assist police investigations.
Police investigations on the case were still continuing.
