The foreign affairs ministry today said that no Maltese nationals were injured in the earthquake that shook northern California on Sunday.

In a statement issued this morning, the ministry said that Malta’s consul in San Francisco, Louis J. Vella, confirmed that no Maltese national was reported injured.

However, one Maltese family suffered structural damages to their home but nobody was injured.

On Sunday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 - believed to be the biggest in the region in 25 years - hit northern California, causing injuries and damage to buildings. At least 87 people have been taken to hospital in the Napa area, a renowned wine-producing region and tourist area.

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in order to deal with the effects of the quake.
