In a meeting held last week, the Cabinet approved the commercialisation of sites within the Marsascala Family Park.

Environment and Sustainability minister Leo Brincat announced that tenders would soon be issued the operation of several areas within the park during a press conference today.

The move to rent out areas of the park hopes to give visitors more choice and to provide private operators with the opportunity to use the park.

A timeframe for the publication of tenders was not given as talks with the Lands Department and the EU Affairs Ministry are still ongoing.

16 expressions of interest from 14 different entities were received when the call opened in May.

Among others, the operation of a restaurant area, rock-climbing facilities, stables and a farm area are being offered to private entities.

Money from the rental of the park sites will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the park.

Public access to the main areas, including the play and gym areas, gardens, picnic areas and the dog park, would remain free.
