Peter Grech appointed new Attorney-General

Peter Grech, 53, has been appointed as the new Attorney-General. Grech has been working in the Attorney-General’s Office for the past 27 years.

A Government statement announced that Grech would be replacing current Attorney-General Silvio Camilleri, who will be appointed as the new Chief Justice.

Camilleri will replace incumbent Chief Justice Vincent de Gaetano, who will be replacing Giovanni Bonello as Malta’s judge in the ECHR in Strasbourg, who has been in the post since 1997.

Grech graduated as Doctor of Laws from the Universityof Maltain 1979 and was called to the bar in January 1980 when he went into private legal practice. Later in 1980 and in 1981, Grech acquired experience in private industry working as an export sales manager and returned to private legal practice in mid-1981.

He joined the Attorney-General’s office in June 1983 as Counsel for the Republic and was appointed Senior Counsel for the Republic in 1986, Assistant to the Attorney General in 1994 and Deputy Attorney General in 2005.

During his career with the Attorney-General’s office Grech has pleaded on behalf of Government in a large number of court cases, mainly of a civil, constitutional and human rights nature and has also participated  in many major law reform projects.

In the international field, the new Attorney-General has often formed part of Government delegations and negotiating teams and has represented Government in many international meetings.

Grech has been a Lecturer in Media Law, Administrative Law and in other branches of public law at the Universityof Maltasince 1994.

In his student days Grech was Secretary General and Vice-President for National Affairs of the Students Representative Council and between 1981 and 1986 was President of Birkirkara Football Club.

He acted as Disciplinary Commissioner for the Malta Football Association (MFA) and for the Acquatic Sports Association (ASA) on a number of occasions.

Grech is married to Mariella nee Delia and has two children, Ylenia and Daniel.
