A video showing a bus driver struggling with a malfunctioning steering wheel has prompted Malta Public Transport to carry out an in-depth analysis of the incident, according to a press statement released today.

Both bus and driver were suspended from service following the incident. The bus was referred to be inspected by Transport Malta officials and to a full roadworthiness test, where it was confirmed that all repairs had been done, and that it was now fit and safe for use.

“Malta Public Transport is issuing this suspension because it is of the utmost importance that both the sub-contractor and the driver appreciate the risks associated with this incident and that they should have acted differently in the interest of the safety of their passengers which should always come over and above everything else” the bus company said.

The company also stressed that their drivers undergo training towards attaining a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), which is also a requirement for all other professional bus and coach drivers employed by other companies. High up in the priorities of this training is passenger safety, and drivers are taught how to proceed in instances of malfunction.
