The Maltese delegation to the Special Olympics arrived in Turnhout, Belgium, yesterday and were greeted by the Mayor Eric Vos as well as MEP Marlene Mizzi, Mrs Michelle Muscat and ambassador to Belgium Ray Azzopardi.

A welcome ceremony was organised by the Mayor and consisted of the lighting of the Olympic flame.

This year's edition of the Special Olympics has adopted the motto "A Great Performance Deserves a Great Audience", outlining how the event goes beyond just sport but also an opportunity to foster acceptance and inclusion.

Addressing the athletes, Mizzi said,"This event is  ' Special'  because it represents each athlete's special talent, notwithstanding the difficulties encountered."

"Sport is the right instrument we should use to promote social inclusion and integration, an instrument that affects athletes´ lives in a positive way, increases their self-confidence and means of empowerment."
