Labour MP says addressing benefits dependency reduces poverty
Pre-budget document underlines necessary courageous reforms to curb national debt
The pre-budget document underlines the courageous reforms required to reduce national debt, encourage economic growth and safeguard competitiveness, Labour MP Charles Mangion said.
In a press statement issued by the Labour Party, Mangion said the government was implementing reforms to support social services without the need to increase taxes.
The cost of social security is expected to reach €828 million this year. It is estimated that poverty affects 20% of the population.
“Reducing dependency on social benefits is not only a valid economic reform, but social. Dependency on social benefits gives rise to poverty and initiatives such as those spearheaded by the Employment and Training Corporation give individuals the opportunity to learn and train,” Mangion said.
He said that individuals who feel sidelined by society should be given the opportunity to improve their qualities and regain trust in themselves. “It is not an easy process and requires the support of all sectors,” he said.
Mangion added that supporting human resource was pivotal in sustaining current and future generations. To sustain the economy he added, there must be an increase in the number of persons who join the workforce.
