Maltese MEP urges immediate action on Libya
Miriam Dalli tells EU that recent migrant tragedies at sea "are attributable to the instability in Libya".
Labour MEP Miriam Dalli has urged the EU to address instability in Libya “immediately”.
Addressing a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg today, during which the Socialist and Democrats Group tabled a resolution on the Libya situation, Dalli highlighted the recent tragedies at sea, saying they are attributable to the instability in Libya.
The recent reports of the death of 700 African migrants “clearly shows the resulting pressure on EU border states, primarily Malta and Italy”, said Dalli.
Dalli appealed to the EU member states and the international community at large to commit themselves to finding a solution that will halt the violence and put Libya “on the road to peace”.
She encouraged cooperation with the UN, which she described as the ideal forum for taking action with respect to the situation in Libya.
