Passengers talk of 'terrifying moments' on Ryanair Malta-Treviso flight

A number of passengers have spoken about their ordeal aboard a Ryanair Boeing 737 flight from Malta to Treviso last night.

The aircraft hit strong turbulence during flight, injuring six people, and pilots were forced to make an emergency landing at Bologna's Marconi airport.

The incident happened at 8:20pm yesterday evening, when the flight that departed from Malta was reportedly caught up in severe turbulence while descending over the Tyrrhenian Sea, There were 170 people on board the flight, 40 of whom were Maltese.

According to the Bologna airport authorities, the plane struck two air-pockets causing the aircraft to buckle.

Passengers who spoke to Italian media, explained how 40 minutes into the flight, the plane violently buckled twice at a time when stewards were walking through the aisle distributing food and drinks to passengers.

"The trolley just lifted and hit the roof, while everything flew onto seated passengers. Those who were were not tied into their seat belts hurt themselves as they were thrown off their seat, while those who remained seated hurt when the overhead compartments opened and baggage fell onto them," a passenger told the Tribuna di Treviso newspaper.

Another passenger commented on Venice daily 'Il Gazzettino' who said that she felt lucky she wasn't tall, as she would have bumped her head with the over head compartment.

"They were 20 terrifying seconds," she wrote.

Meanwhile, the pilots landed the plane at Bologna's Marconi airport, where six passengers were treated for shock and slight injuries. A steward was referred to hospital, while three passengers refused to continue with their trip and stayed at the airport.

All passengers were later flown out of Bologna to Treviso on another aircraft.

'There were 170 people on board the flight, 40 of WHICH were Maltese.' >>> should be : 'There were 170 people on board the flight, 40 of WHOM were Maltese.' 'while those who remained seated hurt when the over head compartments opened and baggage fell onto them' >>> 'while those who remained seated GOT / WERE hurt when the over head compartments opened and baggage fell onto them' 'Another passenger commented on Venice daily 'Il Gazzettino' who said that she felt lucky' >>>> Another passenger commented on Venice daily 'Il Gazzettino', IN WHICH SHE said that she felt lucky ...'

@Murdock2406 To say that refuelling while passengers are boarding is not true. This is only done in exceptional situations. With Ryanair it is standard proceedure because of their extremely short 25minute turnarounds. Ryanair Cabin Crew very often escort passengers on and off the aircraft. This means that with passengers on board and during refuelling, there is less than the legal minimun crew on board and this is illegal. Do you still think that Ryanair are safer than other airlines?

Michael O'leary only says he wants to get rid of the co-pilot in order to get free publicity! Just like standing seats and paying to go to the toilet! All a load of bull! He does not ever actually intend to do these things but enjoys getting free publicity by saying them! As for fuelling the aircraft when boarding. This is a standard thing for all low fare airlines not just ryanair! infact Ryanair are safer than most other airlines that do this procedure as one pilot has to be monitoring the refuelling from outside the aircraft in ryanair! no other airline is as careful as this!

Ryan Air's general manager wants that no co-pilot would be present in all their flights. This is extremely dangerous, hope that the authorities take this action. Hope that Ryan Air will not continue refueling their aeroplane when the passengers are on board because it is extremely dangerous and not safe for the passengers who are un aware of such situation.
