General Workers Union ‘won’t succumb to Enemalta’s arrogance’
Trade union says number of ‘arrogant management officials’ taking arbitrary decisions affecting workers
A number of senior Enemalta officials within the company’s management were taking arbitrary decisions affecting workers, the General Workers Union said today.
Lambasting “the arrogance” of these officials, the trade union said it won’t allow any changes affecting workers to take place. “Any such changes have to be first agreed with the GWU,” it said.
The GWU has now issued directives to workers employed in the security section. It warned that, unless the present situation is not rectified, it could extend its directives to all the other sections.
“There are certain management officials who have adopted a confrontational attitude that does not bode well to industrial relations between the two sides and the challenges that lie ahead for Enemalta which cannot be implemented without the cooperation and support of the General Workers Union,” it said.
The GWU said it was unacceptable that changes affecting working were being communicated to the trade union via email or telephone communication. “This is not how healthy industrial relations are conducted.”
The union warned that it will not hold back from naming and shaming “these officials forming part of Enemalta’s new management whose new position went to their heads”.
It urged Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi to intervene into the matter.
The complaints of the GWU’s chemicals and energy section enjoy the support of the secretary general Tony Zarb. Section secretary Jason Deguara urged workers to follow directives and orders issued by the union.
