Fernandes beaching ‘result of miscalculation’ – Captain Morgan

Transport Malta launches inquiry into incident. Captain Morgan says experienced captain ‘miscalculated’ during Comino return trip.

It departed from Sliema at approximately 7:30pm and was on its way to St Paul’s Bay when it struck a reef off Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.

Captain Morgan said the incident “was a result of a miscalculation by the vessel’s experienced captain” but did not delve into detail.

“As soon as Captain Morgan Cruises were advised of the incident, the authorities concerned - including the AFM, the Police, Civil Protection and the Harbour Master - were duly informed and asked to lend immediate assistance so as to assure the passengers’ and the crew’s safety. The company also arranged for privately owned speedboats – from Yellow Fun and Oki-Koki Banis – to be sent to Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq to provide additional support.”

Transport Malta, through its Merchant Shipping Directorate, has launched a safety investigation into the incident.

All of the passengers and the members of the crew were safely brought ashore shortly after the incident. Nobody was injured.

“Captain Morgan wishes to thank the AFM, the Civil Protection Department, the Police (Naxxar), the Paramedics, the Harbour Master, Yellow Fun, Oki-Koki Banis, the passengers who cooperated with the crew, and all those who offered assistance in connection with this unfortunate incident.”
