‘No more weapons in Parliament’
No weapons in Parliament as from Monday, MPs informed
Anyone entering Parliament in Valletta will be frisked and have their bags checked by AFM members, MPs have been informed.
In a letter sent by Clerk of the House Ray Scicluna, all MPs were informed that as from Monday 24 November new security measures will be in place to ensure that no weapons are carried inside the Palace where Parliament convenes.
The new measures were announced in the wake of the revelation that home affairs minister Manuel Mallia’s drivers carry a weapon and in an interview with Illum.com.mt PN whip David Agius expressed his concerns over the presence of armed people inside parliament.
This week, the opposition and Alternattiva Demokratika called for Mallia’s head after one of his drivers was this week involved in a shoot out following a minor traffic accident.
All MPs, ministers and their staff, Parliament employees and reporters will now undergo the security check before entering the building.
