MUMN ready to meet health ministry only 'if no conditions are imposed'

The MUMN said yesterday it is ready to hold meetings with the Ministry of Health to discuss the issues of understaffing "provided no conditions are imposed."

In a unanimous vote the council of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses agreed to meet with the Ministry of Health to discuss solutions to the problems of understaffing of nurses in hospitals, only if the meetings are held without conditions.

The union sadi it is refusing to suspend industrial directives as a result of previous promises made by the ministry that were never honoured. "Directives were suspended four months ago at the request of the Ministry so that meetings could be held on a fortnightly basis. These meeting were never held due to other commitments on the part of the Health Division."

The council of the MUMN met yesterday to discuss the current issues with the Ministry of Health regarding the hospitals. The MUMN is giving the government a weeks chance to organise these meetings. In the event that meetings do not occur they will be forced to step up industrial directives.

Very reasonable, talks should be made on a level playing ground. The MUMN are not a village council and imposing conditions is a show of disrespect.
