Gas-generated electricity will be available by June 2016, according to an announcement by energy minister Konrad Mizzi. The interconnector to Europe, with a 200MW capacity, will be commissioned in early 2015.

A Maltese homeowner has reported that a foreign national has used her address in applying for a residence permit. The woman received a letter at her home stating that a man applying for residence had his application accepted and could pick up his permit from government offices. Another similar incident occurred in August and raised questions about the security checks done on applicants for residence permits.

Sources tell this newspaper that in a number of telephone calls, minister Manuel Mallia, his driver Paul Sheehan, acting police commissioner Ray Zammit, ministry chief of staff Silvio Scerri and head of government communication Kurt Farrugia agreed on a version of events that had Sheehan firing warning shots into the air on the night of the 19 November.

The flu shots available in Malta are different to those being used in Italy, where they have been linked to deaths. The company supplying the vaccines to Italy does not have the license to be used locally.

Despite EU regulations outlawing the practice, minors are still being kept in detention centres with adults, putting them at risk of falling prey to smugglers and traffickers. Minors remain in the centres for up to two weeks, the time it takes for authorities to ascertain their age.
