Valletta jeweller sees off assailants in failed robbery

A 79-year-old jeweller was reported to have been injured this morning in a failed hold-up at Frank Zampa Jewellery in Valletta.

Two men, one of whom was armed, entered the St Lucy street shop, demanding cash.

The Valletta jeweller resisted and a shot was fired, hitting no one, but the jeweller suffered a blow to his face. He has received hospital treatment.

He was reported to have managed to grab the assailant’s weapon. The robbers escaped towards Victoria Gate, where a getaway car was waiting. Police have requested footage from CCTV cameras around the area.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani is holding an inquiry.
