WATCH | German TV crew film illegal hunting at Dingli, CABS record more bird killing on video
Following the renewed fly-in of numerous birds of prey to Malta late yesterday afternoon, poachers shot at Honey Buzzards and Marsh Harriers at several places on the island early this morning.
According to the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) at least four birds were killed outright. A CABS team on the Dwejra Lines managed to film the shooting down of a Honey Buzzard and a Marsh Harrier. The police, called to the spot by the team, searched the area but failed to find either the poacher or the dead birds in the difficult terrain.
At 6:10am several hunters shot at a group of Marsh Harriers that had roosted in Wied-ir-Rum for the night. At least one bird was hit and disappeared towards Dingli radar station.
This incident was witnessed by both the CABS team as well as a film crew from Bavarian Television (Bayerische Rundfunk), one of the largest regional TV stations in Germany. The TV crew, led by the well-known author Eberhard Meyer, are on Malta at the moment gathering material for a documentary on illegal slaughter of migrant birds and the work of conservationists on the island. The film will be broadcast on German television on 24 October.
CABS is certain that the shooting incidents witnessed by them this morning represent only a fraction of the illegalities that actually take place. “We had four teams covering an area of some 12 square kilometres. We have no idea what occurred elsewhere in the remaining 350 square kilometres of the island” commented CABS spokesperson Axel Hirschfeld.
