The new year began in tragedy as a 22-year-old student died as a result of a car accident in Gozo. Matthew Meilak was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, Miguel Camilleri, also 22, sustained serious injuries. His condition was described as stable after surgical intervention.

Dar tal-Providenza has raised €650,000 to help support people with disabilities. The yearly fundraiser helps fund services, support and accommodation for its roughly 100 residents.

The Constitutional Court is expected to give its go-ahead for the spring hunting referendum, a decision it will be taking in one week. The Coalition Against Spring Hunting collected signatures from some 40,000 registered voters. Both FKNK and Kaccaturi San Umbertu have filed objections.
