Omani delegation in Malta to discuss investment
Bilateral consultations on the issuing of visas are expected, as is the possibility that Oman will open a consulate in Malta.
Minister of foreign affairs George Vella welcomed an Omani delegation earlier today, ahead of two days of preliminary meetings that it is hoped will yield a stronger relationship between the two countries.
“Although we are geographically far apart, we have the same goals and they are peace and prosperity,” said Minister Vella. He continued by saying that the two countries have similar sea-faring interests, which he hopes will lead to the countries working closer together.
A number of Omani companies are being represented during the visit, led by representatives of Oman’s top financial services provider Bank Muscat, as the sectors of financial services, shipping, energy, tourism and education have drawn interest from investors.
The delegation will meet with representatives of local businesses, including the Malta Chamber of Commerce, and has extended an invitation for a meeting with the minister of finance.
Bilateral consultations on the issuing of visas are expected, as is the possibility that Oman will open a consulate in Malta. There are also hopes that the Malta Chamber of Commerce and its counterpart in Oman will form a joint business council.
“The next two days are intended as a way for the Omani delegation to understand the way the Maltese economy works, the sectors in which Malta is particularly advantageous, and the strength of the financial services which stayed strong despite the recent economic crisis,” said Vella. “The meetings will also target industries like education, aquaculture and tourism, which Oman is very eager to develop,” Vella continued.
