175 policemen injured on duty in past three years

Home Affairs Minister reveals that 31 police reports on loud music in the Bugibba area were filed throughout 2014

175 policemen were injured while on duty between 2012 and 2014, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela revealed.

Responding to a parliamentary question aired by Opposition MP Censu Galea, Abela said that these injuries ranged from training injuries, traffic accident injuries, and injuries following attacks by suspects to injuries as a result of falling off horses.

In response to a separate parliamentary question by Galea, Abela also said that the police force is 79 employments and promotions away from reaching its ‘full complement’ of 2,237 members.

“The government has employed 113 new police recruits, and will make use of police constabularies and experienced reinstated policemen until the complement is reached,” Abela said. “However, I believe that the police force needs new blood. The recruitment of new policemen will not yield satisfactory results if these new recruits are not provided with advanced training.”

“In connection with these reports, 21 people have already been charged in court, some of them on more than one occasion, and 11 other people are waiting to be charged in court.”
