CMTU wants MCESD to discuss energy prices

Confederation of unions says transparency needed on the way fuel tariffs have been set

The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions has supported calls for a meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social development to discuss energy tariffs.

In a statement, the seven-union confederation said both the government and the social partners had an obligation to ensure that, in no way should “honest hard-working taxpayers be burdened with extra energy costs especially when further reductions in oil prices are envisaged”.

The CMTU said the government should be transparent in the implementation process of the formula that sets the cost of energy tariffs by engaging the social partners on all aspects that could in effect help the taxpayers to maintain the standard of living they deserve.

The CMTU’s call follows a meeting with Opposition leader Simon Busuttil on Saturday morning during which the prices of fuel were discussed.

As of today, the price of petrol is €1.38 and the price of diesel is of €1.31 per litre. It is however expected to continue going down for a few months following new agreements Enemed secured with BP.
