Majority of Freeport workers join GWU

GWU writes to Malta Freeport Terminals to grant it sole recognition

The General Workers’ Union has written to the management of the Malta Freeport Terminals to grant it sole recognition after the majority of the Freeport workers joined the GWU.

“Once recognition is granted, it’s the GWU intention to immediately call for discussions to be held to address pending issues,” the union said.

The GWU has informed the management of the Malta Freeport Terminals to immediately stop any discussions concerning workers’ rights.

Furthermore the GWU has made it clear that it would not acknowledge any agreement that the management would reach with any other union.

“As soon as the Malta Freeport Management grants sole recognition to the GWU, it will submit its proposals for the new collective agreement,” it added.

The GWU is satisfied that the Freeport workers decided to join it, in spite of the difficulties and intimidations they face on daily basis.

“Employees also signed a declaration in which they made it known that they were leaving their former representatives.”

The GWU is calling for the newly joined members at the Malta Freeport Terminals to remain vigilant and to not succumb to any threats or acts of intimidation.

“If this occurs, they are encouraged to contact the Union so that it will take all the necessary steps to safeguard their rights.”
