600 accidents involving Arriva bendy-buses

3,367 accidents occured during Arriva's tenure as public transport operator, 596 of which involved bendy-buses

The bendy-buses used by former public transport operator Arriva were involved in 596 accidents in their short-lived spell on Maltese roads, between July 2011 and August 2013.

Responding to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi revealed that the vast majority (409) of these incidents involved crashes between bendy-buses and cars. Four of these crashes involved more than one car. 

70 of the accidents were crashes between bendy-buses and other buses, while 116 of them were reported as ‘other incidents’.

Nine people were hospitalized following these accidents.

2,771 accidents involving regular Arriva buses

In response to a separate question by Agius Decelis, Mizzi also revealed that regular buses were involved in 2,771 accidents during Arriva’s tenure as Malta’s public transport operator between July 2011 and December 2013. 50 people were hospitalized following these accidents.

1,823 of the accidents were crashes between buses and private cars, with more than one car involved in 40 of these incidents.

267 of these accidents were crashes between two buses, while 681 of them were ‘other incidents’.
