AD ask why PN leader has not suspended Giovanna Debono
Former Gozo minister's claims that she had no knowledge of free construction work carried out by her ministry are 'not credible' , Arnold Cassola says
Alternattiva Demokratika have joined the Labour Party in questioning why PN leader Simon Busuttil has not yet suspended Nationalist MP and former Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono.
“We ask why Busuttil has as yet taken no action whatsoever to suspend Debono pending further investigations, including police investigations which are apparently already in hand,” AD chairperson Arnold Cassola said.
MaltaToday reported on Sunday that Gozo constituents were offered free construction, paid by the Gozo ministry under the previous administration.
A Gozitan whistleblower revealed a devious scheme to provide construction work done for free for constituents in Gozo, targeting potential voters of Debono. The scheme was coordinated by her husband, Anthony.
Anthony Debono refused to answer questions when contacted. Giovanna Debono, told about the matter, said it was the first time she was hearing about it and that she had no knowledge of it and therefore she could not comment.
"In a modern democracy it is inconceivable that Ministers employ their spouses in their own Ministry,” Cassola said. “Ms Debono has said that she knew nothing about the fact that her husband had been in charge of coordinating construction work undertaken by her Ministry through contractors in private property with the taxpayer footing the bill. This reaction is not credible".
