Ornis recommendation to open spring hunting ‘an indecent proposal’

The proponents for the abolition of the hunting, Spring Hunting Out (SHout), today nailed a “notification for an indecent proposal” notice in response to last night’s Ornis Committee meeting voting in favour of a spring hunting season in April 2015.

“The Ornis Committee is dominated by hunting sympathisers and so it is no surprise that, despite overwhelming evidence presented to them that spring hunting should not be allowed in Malta, they approved a spring hunting season,” SHout spokesperson Saviour Balzan said.

“The decision was also taken despite a referendum taking place on spring hunting on 11 April. This decision shows once again how the hunting lobby has bullied Maltese institutions over the years to get their way. This is why a ‘No’ vote in the referendum is so important.

Balzan termed the decision "indecent" as independent scientific evidence has proved that the spring hunting should not be allowed in Malta

"The Ornis committee does not care about the democratic process," Balzan added

Reacting to the decision by the Ornis Committee, who hold their meetings in the MEPA building, SHout spokesperson Moira Delia said, “The referendum is a democratic process whereby the people can decide about the future of spring hunting in Malta. It is profoundly undemocratic that the Ornis Committee has tried to pre-empt the decision that will be made by Maltese voters.”

As they nailed up the ‘notification for indecent proposal’ sign, Delia said: “Permission for a spring hunting season is not granted until the people decide on April 11th. A ‘No’ vote will ensure that it does not happen in 2015 or ever again.”

Delia urged the Maltese public to go out and vote ‘No’ to spring hunting so that families can once again enjoy the countryside without the fear of being harmed in the process.
