The Castille Square embellishment project was approved by Mepa through a development notification order, a legal notice used for small development alterations to circumvent the lengthy full application process. The DNO, issued on 17 February, was approved within 24 hours of submission.

The Auditor General's report on the Socar hedging deal was presented to the Public Accounts Committee yesterday. The deal cost the Maltese government €67 million.

There was no official warning given to the management of Value Added Oil Services Ltd before an armed group surrounded the oil field and abducted nine foreign workers. The Maltese-registered company's employees were unharmed during the ordeal but no mention was made of reports that eight Libyan guards had been beheaded during the incident.
