10,547 single parents receiving children’s allowance

Total of children in single parent households receiving allowance amounts to 14,775 • Nine children under 16 years of age in one household

A total of 10,547 single parents receive children’s allowance for 14,775 children, social solidarity minister Michael Farrugia told parliament.

In reply to a question raised by PN MP Claudette Buttigieg, Farrugia said 8,664 households received a means test-based allowance for 12,303 children while 1,883 households received a flat rate allowance for 2,472 children.

While the majority of allowance is given to households with one child under 16 years of age (7,270), six households were registered as having five children, seven households with two children and a household with nine children.
