Parliamentary secretary Justyne Caruana officially launches new day centre for the elderly in Sta. Lucija
The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, Justyne Caruana, officially opened a new day centre for the elderly in Sta. Lucija earlier today.
“This centre is the 25th day centre for the elderly across the Maltese islands and it has been launched thanks to the collaboration with the Sta. Lucija local council,” Caruana said.
The day centre, situated in Ġnien is-Serenità, in Sta. Lucia, is described as completely accessible and situated in a very good environment.
“The eentre will also have a schedule of programmes as part of the lifelong learning hubs project in day centres, to provide good quality time for our elderly through training,” Caruana explained.
Caruana said that the present administration had successfully opened day centres in Gżira, Victoria and San Lawrenz, adding that work was currently in progress on an Active Ageing Centre in Birgu and another one in Xewkija Gozo.
Caruana explained how the Government was committed to strengthening community services in the elderly and ageing sectors particularly with the launch of new day centres and night shelter services amongst others.
She added that in the coming months, the Parliamentary Secretariat would be launching the first night shelter service in Gozo after the launch of the respite and long-term care services. She also retitrated that work is being undertaken on another night shelter project in Malta.
Caruana concluded by thanking the mayor and the local council for their contribution, while encouraging other local councils and other entities to step forward and collaborate with the parliamentary secretariat for more projects to strengthen services for the elderly.
