Government requests Auditor General investigation into local council financial aid
The government has issued a statement to ask the Auditor General to investigate a series of financial aid schemes distributed under the previous administration.
The government has asked the Auditor General to investigate the aid schemes issued to local councils during the previous administration. According to the government, the schemes have led to financial issues in a number of councils.
In a statement issued earlier today, the government quoted the Report by the Auditor General on the Workings of Local Government 2013, which stated that the terrible financial situation of a number of local councils “was mainly brought about by the significant commitments that the Councils entered into during the preceding years, especially with the introduction of the PPP scheme15, which costs add up to millions of Euros.”
The government ahs also said that that it would like to know whether the funds given out during the previous administration were distributed following principles of good governance and transparence.
