A record 10,000 people took to the streets in the 12th consecutive Good Friday charity walk from Mellieha to Senglea.

Each participant was asked to donate €10 to Puttinu Cares, meaning that the cancer support group raised an estimate of €100,000, a new record.

The 30km walk started at 2am and lasted around four and a half hours. The participants were greeted with applause as they entered Senglea gate.

Last year, 8,000 people took part in the night walk, raising a total of €75,000. In 2013, over 4,000 people took part and raised a total of €50,000.

The Puttinu fund-raising effort will continue tonight with a marathon on Xarabank. €515,000 were raised during the programme last year.
