Farmer's market opened in Ta' Qali
Rural affairs minister George Pullicino opened the first of three farmer's markets.
During a short visit to the Framer's Market in Ta' Qali, George Pullicino toured the stalls laden with fresh produce, while complimenting the vendors on the set up of their stalls and the products which they were selling.
The market opened for the first time today. It was due to open at 9am but consumers did not give enough time for the vendors to put up their stalls. In just two hours, most of the vendors had sold all of their products.
Pullicino expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the market and said that an idea exists to open three other open-space markets.
“We plan to open one in the South of Malta and another in the area of Sliema and San Gwann,” Pullicino said. “Also we plan to open a farmer’s market in Gozo.”
The rural affairs minister also said that both the consumers and the farmers will be gaining from this market.
“Consumers are given a wider choice from where to buy their products, whilst farmers now have a larger choice where they can choose to sell their products,” Pullicino said. “Farmers can choose either between selling their products at the Pitkalia, to a producer organisation or here at the market.”
The farmer’s market hours will also be extended to every Tuesday between 4pm and 7pm, whilst keeping Saturday’s hours between 9am and 4pm.
Vendors who talked to MaltaToday said they had not expected such an attendance and had to call relatives to bring them more products as the market is open till 4pm.
At the open market, together with fruit and vegetables, one can also find honey, meat, fish, rabbit, bread and Benna products.
