Swieqi PN council plans Arts & Culture Centre if re-elected
PN spokesman for local councils David Agius says local councils need more funds to operate
A PN-led local council in Swieqi plans on setting up an Arts & Culture Centre if re-elected, PN deputy leader for party affairs Beppe Fenech Adami said.
Addressing a press conference in Swieqi, Fenech Adami said the Nationalist Party was fielding 12 candidates for the locality’s council elections and he hoped that the residents would once again trust the PN councillors to take care of their community.
“The projects carried out by the local council, the resurfacing of the roads, the opening of the civic centre and a police station and initiatives such as the outdoor gym all show that a council led by the PN does make a difference in the residents’ lives,” he said.
Fenech Adami said the population in Swieqi was growing and the local council was calling on the government to provide the necessary funds to be able to carry out road maintenance works.
PN spokesman for local councils David Agius reiterated his appeal to the government to provide more funds to the local councils. This, he said, could easily be done by giving local councils 10% of government’s income through car licenses and 10% of the income from commercial establishments’ licenses.
Agius said the government should create a specific fund for road maintenance works.
“We have put forward several concrete proposals to the government on how funds for local councils could increase but the government failed to say anything. A promise for a reform of the local enforcement system stopped at the issuance of a white paper,” Agius said.
