Sacred Heart teachers demanding return of head

Teachers have protested at the removal of the Sacred Heart Convent school in St. Julians.

In the last six years Sacred Heart has seen the resignation of four headmistresses and three assistant headmistresses.

John Bencini, president of the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) describes the situation as one of “tension.”

A conflict has arisen between the Board of Govenors and the people who manage the school including the headmistress. The result is that teachers do not know in which direction they are working leading to a “climate of uncertainty.”

The union is demanding information on the role of the members of the board to ascertain whether the headmistress is simply a “puppet” of the board.

So far the union has only declared a conflict with the school but insists that the Board of Govenors provides information of the steps it is going to take to correct the situation within one or two weeks.

According to Bencini the conditions in the primary school are unacceptable, however the circumstances in the secondary school are less than desirable and he hopes that the same situation does not occur.
