Customs officials seize a sizable amount of smuggled cigarettes and cigars

Customs officials find some 230,230 smuggled cigarettes and 400 smuggled cigars in recent weeks

Customs officials made a number of findings of smuggled cigarettes in recent weeks.

In a statement, the Customs Department said that the findings amounted to 230,230 smuggled cigarettes and 400 smuggled cigars. The findings were a result of a number of searches carried out as soon as they were brought into the country, as well as a number of establishments.

The statement explained that the findings made prior to the introduction into the market amounted to 147,000 smuggled cigarettes and 400 smuggled cigars. The items were found in various ports after an investigation of a number of ships and searches in aeroplane passengers’ luggage, as well as searches in mail and courier packages.

“The findings within the market amounted to some 83,320 smuggled cigarettes following a number of investigations of various shops, establishments, clubs, garages and vehicles around the island,” the statement reads.

The statement also explained that the department had noticed that a small number of American Legend, Tradition and Manchester branded cigarettes.

“These three brands are not sold in the Maltese market, and as such, they have been imported illegally,” the statement warns.

The department also went on to point out that according to Tobacco Manufacture regulations, nobody is allowed to have tobacco products or cigarettes that haven’t had their taxes paid in their possession.

“Cigarette packets that don’t have the necessary Customs stamp, should not be used and any cigarettes that breach rules will be confiscated by the government,” the statement reads.

It added that the minimum fine for people caught with smuggled cigarettes in their possession, is €250, excluding taxes.

“The department will be taking serious action against anyone importing, storing, selling or having these cigarettes,” the department added, explaining that the police have power to take the necessary steps against anyone found with smuggled packets of cigarettes.
