Minister categorically denies Police Commissioner is on his way out
Jason Azzopardi asks minister whether speculation over the imminent departure of Police Commissioner is true
Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela has categorically denied that Police Commissioner Michael Cassar was on his way out.
Abela, in reply to a parliamentary question raised by shadow justice minister Jason Azzopardi, “categorically denied” the speculation.
Azzopardi’s question read: “Can the Minister categorically deny certain persistent speculation that the government is going to fire the Police Commissioner and appoint someone else?”
Cassar was appointed Police Commissioner under Abela, who in December presented appointment letters to Cassar as the new Police Commissioner. Cassar replaced Ray Zammit as Police Commissioner after the latter was found guilty of “gross negligence” by an inquiry board that was set up to investigate the Sheehan shooting case.
