Bird massacre around Prime Minister's summer residence

Hunters this evening massacred dozens of birds of prey around the residence of the Prime Minister at Girgenti. But there were no police to stop the indiscriminate killing. Reports all over the Island talked of hundreds of birds of prey and herons gunned down by hundreds of hunters.  Maltese hunters are renowned for infringing the law and ignoring laws that protect wildlife

Dozens of protected birds of prey and herons were shot this evening in several parts of Malta and Gozo.  The bad weather led to a massive migration of kestrels and the world endangered Lesser Kestrel to the Maltese Islands.  Reports reaching MaltaToday talked of hunters shooting next to the Prime Minister's summer residence in Girgenti and gunning down Kestrels and Hobbies. Apart of Grey Herons which are also protected.  Birdwatchers in Buskett talked of dozens of falcons dancing in the air as they fed on flying insects.  The Buskett reserve is a very small copse of Aleppo pines which is generally safe for  migrating birds, but in general the outskirts of Buskett hold several poachers who gun down Birds of Prey as they attempt to roost in the nearby trees. Killing is just for the fun of it.  But many still keep the trophies to occasionally stuff them.

Birdlife Malta activists told MaltaToday that since the end of a camp in September manned by foreign observers hunting abuses have increased. In spite of attempts by the hunting lobby led by Lino Farrugia to give the impression that Maltese hunters are law abiding citizens, abuses continue.

In the last weeks several examples of illegal hunting have taken place including the shooting of a sea eagle, better known as the Osprey.  Both political parties - the Nationalists and Labour party -  have been trying to give the impression to Brussels that Maltese hunters are law abiding citizens but the most recent events prove that hunting in Malta remains indiscriminate.

It is not my intention to deny that hunting illegalities are perpetrated. However, I do note some inconsistencies with this article. I have gone through a detailed check of a falcon's diet, and falcons do not feed on flying insects! However Starling do, and I know that there was a moderate passage at the time of the report, so if that were the case, then any shooting was completely legitimate. On a separate note, if dozens of protected birds, actually a "massacre" occured, how come not a single picture of a downed bird was taken. I'm somewhat more than sure that if a picture of that type was anywhere handy, there wouldn't be one with an unscathed kestrel! Likewise, "reports all over the island" please spare me, I didn't hear a single shot in my whereabouts at the time of this report! On another level, I think that it is very unethical that while Lino Farrugia is mentioned by name, when it comes to the other side of the coin, we only get "Birdlife Malta activists". If you want to sustain the allegations, then whoever made the claims should have likewise been identified named. Regards
