Maltese, Libyan ministries eye cooperation in home affairs
Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela holds bilateral meeting with Libyan counterpart Mustafa Omam Ali Dabashi
The Home Affairs Ministry has offered its collaboration to its Libyan counterpart in the training of disciplined corps and in view of a memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides in July 2014.
In a bilateral meeting held between Minister Carmelo Abela and Minister Mustafa Omam Ali Dabashi, the two sides discussed the possibility of further cooperation. Technical discussions will kick off in the near future.
Abela reiterated Malta’s call for a solution to the Libyan crisis which would lead to stability in the Mediterranean. Referring to the increase in migrant crossings from Libya, Abela said this was also a result of internal political instability.
The minister said that while the European Agenda on Migration was a step in the right direction, migration was a global phenomenon and it should be addressed holistically. Libya, he added, was part of the solution.
Strengthening of border control, the fight against people smugglers and terrorism in Sirte and Derna were also discussed. Dabashi said the government would strengthen its fight against extremism and organised crime.
