Headlines from today's local papers
The headlines today are dominated by the news that the Greek public has voted against the new austerity terms for a new financial aid package. Figures showed that over 60% of voters opted out of the terms offered by international creditors in the historic referendum.

Greek Prime Minister Alex Tsipras hails ‘no’ vote and promises his government is ready to return to negotiations with creditors to reopen local banks. Tsipras has insisted that the vote was not a referendum on whether the country stays in the euro zone or not, but an attempt to reach a better solution with Europe. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that the result of the vote could not be taken lightly, as it carried consequences both for Greece and creditor countries.

The suspension of six workers at the Freeport has resulted in a complete seizure of work at the institution. The workers had been suspended after they refused to work more hours than agreed on, and despite meetings between Freeport management and the General Workers’ Union, no agreement has yet been reached. Another meeting is expected later today. The disagreement also involves the Unjoni Haddiema Maltin, as some of the workers suspended are part of this organization.

Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera ‘washes his hands’ of the behaviour of fellow Parliamentary secretary Michael Falzon in the Strada Zekka expropriation scandal. Answering questions about the issue, Herrera said that there were currently two investigations open and that results of these investigations needed to be well looked into before any comments could be made.

Libyan prime minister Abdullah al-Thinni escorted by armed police on his visit to a local dentist practice in Malta. The newspaper reports that given the situation of the country, dentists are not easy to find and that the dentist who treated him is a former PL general election candidate. The prime minister had just given a news conference at Castille with Muscat, ahead of a meeting with the internationally recognised Tobruk-based government he heads and rival Tripoli factions to sign an accord for a unity government.
