A restaurant owner has been paid €835,000 for the expropriation of The Cottage restaurant on Mikiel Anton Vassalli road, which will now be the site for extensive roadworks.

The roadworks are part of a €39 million, EU-funded upgrade of the TEN-T network at the Marsa and Kappara junctions, that include a series of flyovers.

The restaurant in question measures 335 square metres. Its valuation of €2,491 per sq.m price was carried out by Joint Office director Duncan Mifsud.

The property consists of a two-storey, Class 6 premises located on Sliema Road and the regional road roundabout, located outside the Gzira urban conservation zone and earmarked for the improvement of the Kappara junction.

The junction projects will remove critical road traffic bottlenecks.

Transport Malta received five bids for a tender for the construction of the grade separated junction at Kappara. Works will start once the adjudication process by the Department of Contracts is finalised and on completion of the Coast Road Reconstruction project. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) approved the Kappara Junction project in August 2013, which includes a flyover and the widening of part of the Regional Road.
