Update 2 | Two ‘well known’ criminals found hidden in parliament
Two Maltese men who are well known to the police arrested after illegally entering parliamentary building through tunnel, police insist there is ‘no cause for alarm’
Two men who are “well known to the police” were this morning arrested after illegally entering the Parliament building in Valletta this morning.
Sources said the trespassers – who have been identified as two Maltese men who are well known to the police – entered in parliament this morning at around 9:30am after making their way to the tunnel underneath City Gate.
The tunnel, which now houses the mechanical heartbeat of the new parliament building, was formerly the Yellow Garage, and lies directly above the parliamentary chambers. The police said the men did not manage to enter the actual parliament building, but only managed to make it to the tunnel.
The police explained that the men were spotted during a routine check by a police officer stationed at the building.
The men, who are Maltese and are well known to the police, were immediately arrested and taken to the Valletta police station for further investigation.
Sources who spoke to MaltaToday insisted that notwithstanding the security lapse, there was “no cause for alarm.”
In a statement, the Speaker thanked the police for their work in apprehending the unknown trespassers.
