Marsaskala, Cospicua councils welcome university that will 'boost the south'
Marsaskala mayor hails American University of Malta as the 'greatest foreign investment in Marsakala's history'
The Marsaskala and Cospicua local councils have welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement that the ‘American University of Malta’ will be split across the two localities, arguing that the project will provide a well-needed economic boost to the south of Malta.
“This is the greatest foreign investment in Marsaskala’s history and it will certainly have a positive impact on the Maltese economy, particularly in the south,” Marsaskala mayor Mario Calleja said in a statement. “Moreover, the project will not occupy the Zonqor coastline, take up agricultural land, or create obstacles for Zonqor’s residents.
“Its environmental impact will be as minimal as possible, and it will be sustainable for Marsaskala.
The Cospicua local council said that the partial siting of the AUM campus at the former Dock number 1 will have a positive impact on the whole of Cottonera, both from an educational aspect as well as from an economical, social, infrastructural, and environmental one.
“The university will complement the recent development in the dockyard,” Cospicua mayor Alison Zerafa said. “In the name of Cospicua’s residents, I thank the government for its commitment towards breathing new life into the south.”
