Two MCAST lecturers dismissed despite assurance otherwise – MUT
The Malta Union of Teachers appeals to Education Minister Evarist Bartolo over the dismissal of two MCAST lecturers
The Malta Union of Teachers has made an appeal to the Minister for Education and Employment Evarist Bartolo to look into what it termed as “highly debatable terminations” at MCAST.
The union urged Bartolo to reverse the decisions following assurances in the last months by top MCAST officials that such redundancies would not occur.
“This appeal is being made after two lecturers, both American citizens and coincidentally both at the Institute of Art and Design, were suddenly terminated towards the end of their probationary period,” the statement reads.
The MUT added that both lecturers had always received positive reports and had never received any negative feedback from their superiors.
“Both lecturers have volumes of correspondence full of praise and positive feedback from their students and parents,” the union adds, stressing that MCAST needs both lecturers.
“It transpires that vacancies were created after their dismissal and both lecturers are being replaced.”
The Union said that these terminations are debatable for many reasons and on different levels and that while it recognized the legal right of the employer to terminate a job while on probation, it could not understand how both lecturers employed by MCAST last year were fired.
