Dementia centre in Gozo to open in coming weeks

Elderly in Gozo suffering from dementia will be offered free-of-charge services at Dar Padova

A centre catering from dementia sufferers will be opened in Gozo in the coming weeks.

Addressing an informal carer session in Gozo, parliamentary secretary for the elderly Justyne Caruana said the services will be given at Dar Padova in Ghajnsielem.

Each applicant will be examined and those diagnosed with dementia but who still live in the community will benefit from this service.

The initial examination will include a medical history and each application will require a signed consent from the person responsible of the individual.

The service will operate between 7:30am and 4:30pm everyday and is free of charge. Service will include a light snack, tea and coffee.

People at the Dementia Sessions will also benefit from therapeutic sessions by diverse professionals and a number of activities will be set up.

126 persons took part in the Regional Informal Carer session held in Gozo. The secretariat said the attendance reflected the need for more services for older persons on Gozo, services which were recently introduced on the sister island and which will continue expanding in the near future.
