Alternattiva Demokratika welcomed the Prime Minister’s declaration that he will be taking steps to halt once and for all the abuse of asylum seekers being carried out by those who are employing them without respecting their basic rights.

While pointing out that the abuse has been going on for a long time, the Green Party deputy chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said that some “employ” a number of asylum seekers every day by picking them up with a van at Marsa, and subsequently paying them, if they are actually paid, “insignificant amounts of money.”

“This is an insult to the dignity due to every person who works who has the right to adequate payment for his work, irrespective of his origin or the colour of his skin,” Cacopardo said.

In addition to being a vilification of the dignity of every working man in Malta , added Cacopardo , the failure of the state to intervene so far, signifies that the rights and achievements of working man and women are also under threat

AD, said Cacopardo, “hopes that the Prime Minister will implement what he has promised at the earliest.”
