The LNG power station at Delimara is a “completely unnecessary” project, Nationalist MEP David Casa has claimed.

“It has become clear to one and all that the power station is completely unnecessary as the use of the interconnector adequately satisfies domestic needs,” Casa told an energy policy debate at the PN’s Independence Day festivities. “The power station is more about the Prime Minister’s ego rather than doing what is best for Malta.”

The MEP also lambasted the controversial state guarantee granted to the ElectroGas consortium behind the project, the “highly questionable” tendering process that led to the consortium’s selection, and the government’s refusal to publish its contracts with ElectroGas.

Moreover, he argued that the power station will inevitably increase pollution and that the government should be focusing on investing in renewable energy.

At the debate, Casa also reiterated his party’s call on the government to reduce electricity and fuel prices so that they reflect the current market price of oil.

“Fuel prices should reflect market prices and savings should be passed on to the consumer,” Casa said. “It is unacceptable that we continue paying far more than we should.”
